Many people believe that gum disease is simply caused by poor oral hygiene. But did you know that it is actually a communicable infection?
That means that when you come share mouth bacteria with people who have gum disease, or allow your pet to lick your mouth, you’re increasing your risk of developing gum disease. Learn more about that here.Gum disease is associated with other health conditions, as well, such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke—so taking action against developing it is pivotal.
What You Can Do
- There are a variety of actions you may take to decrease your risk.
- Schedule routine dentist appointments and know your periodontal probing score (a score of four or above indicates periodontal disease)
- Know your partner’s probing score
- Refrain from kissing individuals with periodontal disease. If your partner has gum disease, make sure they brush their teeth regularly, especially before kissing, and kill oral bacteria post-kiss with xylitol gum or by brushing
- Brush your teeth after meals, and brush your tongue regularly
- Floss daily
- Do not let your pets lick your mouth
- Refrain from smoking
- Eat a healthy diet
