Why Do We Need Teeth?

We all know that teeth are important. They assist in one of our most basic needs, eating. We often take for granted the value of our teeth – they do more than we think they do.

Eating

Obviously, you need teeth to eat. Teeth are responsible for breaking down your food giving you the ability to swallow it. If you would like to know in more detail about how teeth help us eat, check out this blog post. (link to How Unique are Our Smiles)

Confidence

A smile is proven to be one of the first things a person notices when meeting someone. Having healthy teeth means a boost in self-confidence and will make you want to smile more! In a recent survey from OthodonticLimited.com they found that 92% of respondents said they are more confident with straight, healthy teeth. In the same survey, they found that teeth are only second to weight in things that make people feel insecure. Check out the survey here. Take good care of your teeth, and they will take good care of you!

Speech

Your teeth assist you in making sounds when you talk. Take for example a “t”, as in “tooth”. You cannot make this sound with ease without the assistance of your teeth. Your teeth “align” your tongue and aid it in forming different positions required to make sounds as you speak.

Face Shape

Teeth do a great deal in determining our face shape. Without teeth our cheeks would sink, our jaw would become weaker, and it will be harder to close our mouths. Without our teeth, our face shape changes dramatically.

Each day individuals take for granted how important their teeth are. Taking good care of your teeth means you get to keep them longer, and that is a win in our book. If you need to schedule an appointment or have questions, give us a call.
