Is It Time for a Toothbrush Swap?

Did you know that you should be changing your toothbrush every three months? This means that you should be switching it at least one extra time between your routine appointments (or more, if you are not seeing the dentist every six months).

Why Do I Need a New Toothbrush?

Toothbrush CollectionOver time, bristles may fray and lose their effectiveness, removing less plaque than new brushes. Toothbrushes can also collect bacteria over time, especially if your family is in the habit of leaving the toilet seat up while flushing. By replacing your toothbrush (or toothbrush head, if using an electric toothbrush), you can minimize this exposure to bacteria.

Signs It’s Time for a Replacement

If you are a hard brusher, you may need to replace it more frequently than the recommended three months. Most toothbrushes have blue bristles that fade over time to indicate their wear. Once faded, it is time to replace the brush. Frayed or bent bristles are another good indication that it is time to start using a new toothbrush.

If you are a hard brusher and experience the need for frequent brush replacement, you may want to consider looking into an electric, pressure-sensitive brush to help ensure you are not hurting teeth by brushing with too much pressure.
