A study recently published in the European Journal of Ageing has concluded that poor oral health may contribute to loneliness in older adults. Therefore, maintaining good oral health into old age may be a protective factor against loneliness.

But why would poor oral health cause loneliness?

The study was not conducted to determine a precise reason poor oral health is associated with loneliness. However, there are these possible explanations:

  • Poor oral health may be an indication of overall health. In this case, an older adult may deal with health issues and be unable to socialize with others frequently. This contributes to their feelings of loneliness.
  • Tooth loss and oral disease may impact confidence or ability to socialize. Whether poor oral health results in reduced self esteem, or tooth loss causes difficulties speaking, social interaction can be difficult for older adults who have poor oral health.

Maintaining Good Oral Health

Maintaining oral health for older adults may not be as simple as brushing and flossing twice a day. But, there are many more options for keeping your mouth healthy and pain free than there were even a few years ago. For instance, mini dental implants can secure bridges or loose dentures, or replace a single tooth. Advanced three-dimensional imaging can help your dentist see your jaw and bone structure, so that he/she can provide the solution that works best for you.

If you are having dental trouble, and want see if we can help, you can schedule a consultation at Chanhassen Family Dentistry by calling 952-443-3368.
