It’s the season of sweets and treats. Sugary foods around the holidays are basically inescapable, but eating foods that are high in sugar can jeopardize your oral health.
We wish we were immune to sugar cravings, but understand that it’s hard to pass up on every Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas goodie that appears at work or holiday parties. So, what do we suggest to keep your teeth healthy during the holidays?
To Keep Teeth Healthy:

- Brush twice daily – make sure to brush teeth for two minutes at least twice a day. Remember to reach all surfaces—but don’t brush too hard, since this can damage gums. If you aren’t sure your brushing techniques are up to par, ask Dr. Leonard during your routine visit.
- Floss – brushing alone does not remove all the sugars, bacteria, and plaque that build up on teeth throughout the day or overnight. Flossing helps remove what’s left behind between the teeth for a cleaner mouth and fresher breath.
- Use mouthwash – combat plaque, gingivitis and bad breath with an oral rinse. Just make sure your choice bears the ADA seal of approval.
- Chew sugarless gum – it increases your salivary flow to help neutralize and remove the acid that attacks your teeth when bacteria breaks down the food and sugar that’s left after meals and snacks.
Enjoy some holiday sweets (in moderation) this holiday season, but don’t take it out on your teeth! And of course, remember to schedule your routine visit by calling 952-443-3368.
